Best Essential Oils to Uplift & Boost Energy

Aromatherapy is a fantastic, natural and safe way to boost energy and improve your mood.

There are quite a few essential oils that can be used to boost your energy levels, improve mental clarity and uplift your spirit and I’ve listed the best ones below which can help you to get through the day.

These oils can be used either on their own or in combination with each other, or with any essential oils you choose.


However, some aromas “work” better together and of course every essential oil has its own specific action or benefit, so it is best to stick to those that have complementing properties. For example using calming oils for relaxation or soothing oils for dry skin and so on.

In general most spicy or citrus essential oils can be used to boost energy, as they contain chemicals that stimulate the nervous system, making you feel more awake and alert.

A great blend would be ginger, lime and grapefruit.


An extremely popular blend I’ve found combines peppermint and rosemary together, which have been used together for many years to promote mental sharpness.


All of these may also help with anxiety, bad moods or stress, and increase a sense of confidence.


Here they all are in a bit more detail..


Basil Essential OilFrench (or sweet) basil

It is best known for its ability to relieve mental fatigue, clear the mind and restore mental alertness. Basil also stimulates the adrenal glands, and is also useful for muscle discomfort after exercise.

It blends well with lime, spearmint and rosemary.

CAUTION: Basil should not be used by pregnant women.

Ginger Essential Oil

I love ginger, and as an essential oil it has an invigorating effect on the nerves, and is especially useful if you’re short on sleep. It blends well with lime.

Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit helps to increase your energy levels and stamina throughout the day due to its uplifting scent. It supports cleansing of the system aiding your body to return to optimal health.

Emotional benefits include supporting one’s own sense of self-love and approval.

Jasmine Essential Oil

Jasmine reminds me of early summer months and really uplifts me with its sweet aroma.

It simply relieves stress and uplifts the mind and body, particularly for balancing women’s hormonal cycles.

Lime Essential Oil

Lime is perfect after a long day concentrating on study or work as it lifts mental fatigue.

It is known as a restorative and tonic for overall health and is great in many blends. Lemon can be used as well.

Orange Essential Oil

Likewise orange promotes productivity and its powerful scent will have you feeling invigorated and focused in no time. Orange essential oil will also do wonders for depression.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint can help boost physical performance when working out and stimulates tired muscles, as well as calming and soothing the nerves.

Spearmint essential oil is a great option for children as it is.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Another fantastic mental booster combating against low energy and nervous exhaustion, rosemary helps to increase focus and is widely used when preparing for an exam, or while working on a particularly challenging project at work.

It blends well with basil, lime and mint.



Blends should be mixed in a dark glass bottle with an eye-dropper cap, and clearly labelled.

Add one or two drops of each oil, experimenting until you get a blend you like then roll it gently between your hands for a few minutes to mix evenly.


How to use Essential Oils for Boosting Your Energy

Most essential oils can be applied directly to the skin or inhaled from the bottle or hanky when needed to make you feel more alert.

I prefer to use an aroma diffuser to spread the scent throughout the room, or you can use a spray bottle that dispenses a fine mist, which is particularly nice during the summer months.

Adding oils to an unscented body wash or shampoo is a great touch or even splash a few drops to a hot bath is especially luxurious and may be just what is needed when you’re feeling a little achy.


Of course as a massage therapist I regularly use a range of these essential oils in our studio, blended with cold-pressed vegetable oil like grape seed or coconut oil during sessions.

For those who need a pick me up during a sports massage or intensive remedial treatment will benefit from the blends we select for mental stimulation and to boost your energy.
